QUOTE
Some Abbotsford residents are furious that local taxpayers are being forced to support the Abbotsford Heat professional hockey team.

Council approved a deal with the Heat on Monday that will guarantee the team its $5.7-million annual expenses, regardless of fan support, which is 34-per-cent below expectations.

The subsidies absolve the team from paying its $200,000 annual rent at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre unless a profit is made.

Sixty per cent of any profits will go to the team and just 40 per cent to the city.

I keep meaning to e-mail Ken King and ask him how the decision to move his AHL affiliate to Omaha instead of the sweetheart deal he was going to get from Worcester worked out...

Everyone who didn't see this coming, raise your hands.... I'm looking over at you, local Abbotsford partners...

Bet that decision to pursue the AHL instead of the ECHL looks REALLY smart now, right?

Remember folks, this was all apart of the deal before the season even started, that the city was going to pay for some of the teams expenses due to paying for some teams to come out there to pay.

So this is not a shock and was apart of the deal from the beginning.

Wow, Milwaukee would be glad to have 10% of that money coming in, what a deal! Does this mean that the team will stay for more than the usual two years?

So this is not a shock and was apart of the deal from the beginning.

Everyone reading these boards knew it -- very few of the citizens of Abbotsford realized just how much of a hit it would be taking out of their pocketbooks, however. Now that it's more of a reality, and being better reported, those citizens are becoming aware of just what a boondoggle the AHL and the Fraser Valley "ownership" of the team managed to put them on the hook for. THAT was the point of this article.

And yes, it IS a shock for those citizens -- it's not the first time that a voting populace has had to come to terms with things that were "part of the deal from the beginning" only coming to light later, once things turn sour... and it won't be the last. I think they're completely justified in the anger at being sold a bill of goods.

At least they have lapel pins for sale on their website, more than I can say for those damn Iowa Chops who left an annoying hole in my collection.

I bought one today just in case things get any worse there. (Although I did my part to pitch in)

Yes, I know nobody really cares but there's never anything to read in the Heat's forum so there ya go. mellow.gif

Well I know it has to cross a border but it seems 2 months is ample time to get this delivered. They haven't even charged my credit card yet nor replied to my e-mail. So please disregard my kind words for this organization until further notice.
