I don't think any of the AHL fans are happy with their schedules except for Abbotsford, Hershey and maybe Providence.

Hershey fans arent happy at all. One game apiece at each Atlantic Division slot and no new Western Conference opponents. We're as pissed as anyone, but we're powerless to prevent it. Our only conference is all the teams that have no out-of-conference foes, or even worse, miss out on teams in their own confeence.

QUOTE (Wildcat48 @ Jul 14 2010, 12:53 PM) *
Even Hershey has cut back on travel this season only playing four teams in the North Division.

Actually, that's the same number of West teams we played last season. In fact, it's the same four teams (Toronto, Rochester, Lake Erie, & Manitoba). We actually have to drive past Hamilton to get to Toronto. How confused-1.gif nuts.gif is that ??

QUOTE (Wildcat48 @ Jul 14 2010, 12:53 PM) *
I know Andrews has worked toward putting a format in place that would ensure teams would play more of a variety of team yet keep your rivals for 10 times a season.... The problem is if the owners don't vote for it.... It won't happen.

This is why the re-signing of Lord David was such a non-story, IMHO. He's answerable completely to Bettman on a lot of topics, and to the AHL owners on most others. I'm not entirely sure if he even gets a key to the big boys bathroom.

One more bitching. It is pathetic that we are playing less opponents in a 30 team league than we did as a 16 team league 15 years ago.

Glad I only got half season tickets this upcoming season. I will be able to see all of our opponents plus a few 'repeats' with it. This is going to kill attendance. I know I will have a harder getting my friends to go if it is the same damn teams every time the Pirates play.

From what I had read back in February in a business journal is that the AHL has been hurting for money. I have no idea if this is very true or not, but perhaps it is just something the league wants to do and cut back on travel. We all know Petro and Co. are all for saving pennies over fans happiness.

I really doubt that man... You know that Portland v PBruins brings in more fans than any other Pirates rival, with a close second being Manchester... For the hardcore support it sucks not getting a greater variety of opponents, but to the fan that gets their Pirates info from the newspaper, goes to maybe 5-10 Pirates games a year, this isn't going to be a problem...

Case in point, go to some of the Pirates facebook pages and look at the comments...

Exactly - I would be willing to bet that 50% of the fans at any given game (in ANY AHL city) don't even know who the opponent is as they are driving to the arena.

You are probably right but it sure won't help the season tickets sales.

Marketing rep "Hello Mr. Please Play the West, how would like to see 3 teams 18 times this season!? Then come sign up for the full season ticket package! Doesn't that sound fun and different?"

I get what you mean, but we are in the minority when it comes to Pirates fans... For us, variety of opponents does mean something because I for one would enjoy seeing Syracuse or Rochester or Chicago or Houston or even Abbotsford come to Portland... But like BTV mentioned, at least half of those in attendance would be at a loss to explain who the Pirates are playing on a given night...

Now if the Portland Pirates front office catered to us things might change... But in the meantime we get to see teams like Providence, Manchester, and Worcester more times than we can count...

On the plus side, that means more possible road trips this year for me!

Manchester and Worcester are way closer to me than Portland. For me, that increases the possibility of buying Manchester season tickets as well. I want to know when the Charlotte away games are, I'd be interested in going.
