I'm not sure what they are thinking on what they're going to do with him. Between injury and suspentions he hasn't played more then 40 games since the 07-08 season. I realize we're thin on D on the experience side, but how is this going to help if he ends up being a problem and is suspended. He missed the second half of last season with a head injury. I don't mind adding grit to the team, I think thats something thats been missing for a while. At what cost does that grit come with though? You can't do anything to help the team on the ice if your watching from the stands.

He didnt miss that much time. He played up in the NHL for 30 games, played 40 in the AHL. So he missed about 10. I neverliked him, but he is a classic example (i hope) of a guy you like on your team and hate on the other. We need someone to protect our guys, if he does it, good, if he acts like a ****ing idiot then well we have a problem.

Nothing close to the Verot signing where a hated opponent joined the team but I wonder what Gerbe will think if he ends up down here again.
I guess we should feel honored that Buffalo signed a player specifically for Portland before August. -------------------- AHLFans 2. Bundesliga Hockey Back to Back Champions - 2007, 2008.

Albany's roster from last year had him listed on D so I was going with that information. But he is here to open some space for our other guys, much like Cowan was last year. If he does that, perhaps drops the gloves when needed, then great. On the other hand if he does act like a idot then thats another story. I hope he works out. Should be interesting to see how he and Gerbe mesh.

Conboy played every game as a River Rat on defense. The Canes used him at forward but he was always on defense in the AHL. |

I guess we should feel honored that Buffalo signed a player specifically for Portland before August. I was thinking that it was similar to Darcy Verot I heard about the signing... Shame that the Pirates don't have a Mel Angelstad-type though... This post has been edited by t114: Jul 17 2010, 07:57 PM -------------------- |

I gotta admit, at first, I hated Conboy. Then though, I started watching Gerbe more up close. I can start to see why he had the beef with Gerbe, and why most of the league does. Sure, Conboy has done other dumb things than sucker Gerbe. But, so has Gillies, Angelstad, Tropp (newest Pirate), etc. All the tough guys have been suspended at some point, none are choir boys. Gerbe was the result of several big fights his first season, constantly slew-footing opponents(reason for Conboys actions), sticking at the legs, and constant chirping from a player that will never drop the gloves.

I know he's listed as a wing in the press release and HockeyDB and my email with conversations with the Sabres they plan on using him as a winger... That said, I could see a Clay Wilson, Marc-Andre Gragnani situation arise if Dineen wants to look at that option. What I'm curious is how the fans will react to this signing.... I heard the name Darcy Verot and I wonder if this player will bring back some of those feelings? -------------------- |

I wouldn't lump Conboy in with Gillies or Anglestad. he's not so quick to drop the gloves with a true heavyweight. I'd peg him as a more talented Robitaille. It's a nice pickup for the Pirates, though - adds a little juice to the lineup. Curious, PBA - have you posted stuff like this about Gerbe before? -------------------- .

Well yes and no. During Gerbe's rookie season, he was a lot more dedicated and himself I guess you could say. You would kind of shake your head at the constant mouthing off and sticking he does behind the play, because you knew he would put up some goals. But this past season, Gerbe just wasn't into it. He showed up scoreless in the playoff series, turned the puck over a lot, and doesn't know what passing means. He takes penalties at the worst of times. And I really hope he is in Buffalo or traded this season.
